Learn NLP – Being an Empowering Leader

I train a large number of leaders from different organizations in the region, and most of them are in mid to senior level leadership positions. Most organizations will need to have better quality leaders, and as a result, new skills need to be taught. One particular skill that stands out is neuro-linguistic programming.

We know that communication is an essential skill in the leadership toolbox. If you are effective at communicating, you will most likely be a leader. You can influence and win people over to your way of thinking. Unfortunately, many believe that this is raw talent – that people who are good leaders were born this way. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Leadership is not talent. It is skill. Competence in leadership requires a certain set of skills that enable you to empower other people.

  1. Rapport Building
  2. A leader needs to be able to establish rapport with other people effectively. This basically means they have to be able to connect with them. NLP teaches that you can do so through modeling and understanding what people want. A person tends to find you more likable because you are similar to them in a certain way. Through NLP, you can model what they do, and do as they do. As rapport building can be a complex skill, you will need to really have rigorous training in your sensory attention, so that you can pick out nuances that other people can’t pick out. This allows you to establish rapport in a much more way.

  3. Inspiring
  4. It is common knowledge that leaders have to be inspiring. To be inspirational, you need to know how to speak in a way that evokes emotion. There are several NLP models that can assist you in developing inspiring presentations. The first is to understand a person’s values. Values are concepts that a person deems to be important to them. For instance, freedom and satisfaction. If you are able to find these motivational hot buttons, you will be able to move people emotionally and thus inspire them. It often also takes the ability to tell a story, preferably one that has a deep personal meaning, but also has lessons that can be drawn from experience and shared with the people you want to empower.

  5. Believing
  6. What do people want to believe in? The vision that they can get what they want! But they also want to be able to believe in you as a leader. Beliefs are a major component in NLP, as you can learn how to break old beliefs and form new ones. Beliefs require reference points, and therefore the stronger a belief, the more reference points you build. Let’ s say you want someone to believe they are capable. By simply pointing out the number of times this happens alone, you can motivate and empower them to see the good they have already done, reinforcing their belief in themselves.

There are many other NLP models that assist in leadership development. NLP allows an individual to see the parts of a model that break down what was originally a mystical talent into a concrete and learnable skill. All you need to do is to take action by picking up NLP capabilities, then apply them in the areas where you want leadership in.
